Trans fat is produced by a process called hydrogenation in which polyunsaturated oils are subjected to hydrogen gas at high pressure and temperature in the presence of metal particles, usually nickel oxide. Emulsifiers and starch are added to the mixture to improve the consistency. To remove the unpleasant smell in the product, it is steam cleaned under high temperatures. In the case of products like margarine, the mixture is also bleached to remove the unnatural gray color, and artifici...

So you want to buy Vitamin C?

So you want to buy Vitamin C? Do you want L-ascorbic acid, Ester-C® or Vitamin C Ester? Prof Linus Pauling, Nobel Laurette, in his 1986 treatise How to Live Longer and Feel Better suggested that the true and best form of Vitamin C is L-Ascorbic Acid (C6H8O6). However, this form of Vitamin C increases the acid load on the stomach and if you have low tolerence for acidity, the acid may start to damage the intestine which in turn would respond with diarrhoa to flush out the acid. Well, if ...

OK to have more than an egg a day?

For more than three decades, we have been told that eggs have high cholesterol and consequently taking more than two to three egg yolks a week might lead to heart attack.  As a result, I had been descarding the egg yolks, where the cholesterol is supposed to be, and consumed the egg whites only.  When I was in Zurich, Switzerland, I kept the discarded yolks in a container and deep froze them.  When the container was full, I defroze the yolks and made rich egg yolk puddings to feed the swan...

Laughter as Medicine

Posted by K K THAM on Thursday, October 8, 2009, In : Health and Fitness
Many studies have suggested that laughter is good for our health.  Simply put, laughter reduces stress and since stress negatively affect our immune system, then laughter could at least help our immune system.
In the opening of Paul McGhee's article entitled Use Your Amuse System to Boost Your Immune System he quoted Voltaire: "The art of medicine consists of keeping the patient amused while nature heals the disease."
I prefer to watch comedy than sad movies, for no better reason than to rela...

I am going Nuts over Nuts

A 135g can of peanut with coffee

Nuts have relatively high fat content and have been labelled as unhealthy until recent studies suggest that they are good sources of fiber and unsaturated fat; and that regular moderate consumption would reduce heart diseases and lower the risk of type 2 diabetes.
Now, peanuts and nuts are generally accepted as ‘healthy’ snacks, according to a telephone survey carried by About Nuts in 2007 of people working in the fields of nutrition and health.

There are many kinds of nuts e.g. Brazil ...

What you do reveal about you

Posted by K K THAM on Monday, October 5, 2009, In : General
What you eat and what you do often reveal more about yourself than you think.
For example, you take the "Dessert Personality Quiz Test" and your favourite dessert would reveal what kind of personality you possess.

Your favourite ice cream flavour also says a lot about you.  In a flavorology study directed by Dr. Alan R. Hirsch , it was revealed  that “distinct personalities corresponded with ice cream flavors.”   What is your flavour? Find out more

According to Natalie Josef, Managing Edi...

Yoga for Sehalifs

Posted by K K THAM on Sunday, October 4, 2009, In : Fitness
It is generally accepted that weight or resistance training is good for the bones whereas Tai Chi and Yoga are suitable for building balance.

It is dangerous for Sehalifs (Second Half Lifers) to fall because their bones are not as strong as they used to be.  It can be observed that Sehalifs who break their hips falling generally have little chance of recovery.    You must have seen babies or children falling down, and noticed that more often than not, they pick themselves up and are not hurt...

Flee 9 to 5

Whether you are retired, retrenched or re-organizing your career choice, the book Flee 9 to 5, Get 6 - 7 figures and do what you love by Ben Angel provides plenty of suggestions.

I particularly like the Six publicity formulas you can use to help you get more media coverage at page 143.

It happens. It happens every day. People grow apart. Friends walk hand in hand until they find that their parts no longer intertwine. Lovers kiss to notice that this kiss that once meant weak knees and beating hearts no longer tastes of sweet love but of bitter goodbye. You once poured your heart out to the boy who was your best friend but when you see him again, it’s like the silence swallows you whole and you can’t think of one word to say. So you stare and stare and try to figure out what happened to create this chasm, this black abyss that opened up between you. And most of the time it’s not an argument that tore you apart but life itself. It’s you and it’s them. You changed. You grew up. You made decisions. You moved on. Things that used to mean the world now mean nothing and people that used to make you feel like you could climb the highest mountain now make you feel like drowning at the bottom of the sea. And that’s okay. Because people come and people go and it happens for a reason. Some friendships aren’t meant to last a lifetime, some people can’t be kept, some relationships aren’t worth holding on to. So let go. If they don’t make you happy anymore, let them go.
